Futurama and Red Dwarf (plus The Banana Splits)

(This page contains some large image files, so please allow enough time for it to load...)

I am a fan of pretty much all things "Sci-Fi", not just Dan Dare. Two of my other favourites are the sci-fi comedy TV series "Futurama" and "Red Dwarf" - I love a good laugh! Below are some images, animated GIFs and MP3 music from those series, plus a free Flash online arcade game.

If you've never seen "Futurama" (which was first broadcast in 1999), I thoroughly recommend you to buy at least one season of the 4 (to date) seasons on DVD, or one of the 4 straight-to-DVD films - it's very funny (which is not surprising really since it was co-created by Matt Groening, creator of "The Simpsons") and you don't have to be a sci-fi fan to enjoy it, although it does help.

Below is a picture of some of the characters from the series, including (in the center) the three protagonists Leela the Cycloptic Alien-who-later-turned-out-to-be-a-mutant Human, Fry the Frozen-in-time-for-1000-years Pizza Delivery Boy, and (lying down) Bender the Girder-bending Robot, plus (from left to right around them) Kif Kroker, Zapp Brannigan, Nibbler and Amy Wong:

If you haven't previously seen Rob Grant's and Doug Naylor's "Red Dwarf" (which was first broadcast in 1988), I also heartily recommend you to buy at least one season of it on DVD - season 6 is, in my humble opinion, the best of the 8 (to date) full seasons. (The 2008 follow-up three part mini-season "Back to Earth" is also worth watching if you watch all the full seasons first.) As with Futurama, every episode is really funny and you don't have to be a sci-fi fan to enjoy them, although again it helps.

Below is a photo of the season 8 main cast, consisting of (from left to right) Danny John-Jules as "The Cat", Chris Barrie as "Arnold Judas Rimmer", Robert Llewellyn as "Kryten", Craig Charles as "Dave Lister", Chloe Annett as "Kristine Kochanski" and Norman Lovett as "Holly":

Here are the lyrics to the closing title song:

1. Its cold outside, there's no kind of atmosphere,
I'm all alone, more or less.
Let me fly far away from here,
Fun, fun, fun in the sun, sun, sun.

2. I want to lie shipwrecked and comatose,
Drinking fresh mango juice.
Goldfish shoals nibbling at my toes,
Fun, fun, fun in the sun, sun, sun,
Fun, fun, fun in the sun, sun, sun.
3. I'll pack my bags and head into hyperspace,
Where I'll succeed at time-warp speed.
Spend my days in ultraviolet rays,
Fun, fun, fun in the sun, sun, sun.

4. We'll lock on course straight through the universe,
You and me, and the galaxy.
Reach the stage where hyperdrive's engaged,
Fun, fun, fun in the sun, sun, sun,
Fun, fun, fun in the sun, sun, sun.

Music by Howard Goodall. First and second verse lyrics by Howard Goodall.
Third and fourth verse lyrics by Ian Hu - these are not used in the TV series version of the
song but appear in the medley version above that has appeared on various soundtrack CDs.
TV series version vocals by Jenna Russell. Medley version vocals by Diane Hunte.

The Banana Splits Images and MP3 Music

And finally... It has absolutely nothing to do with anything else on this page, but I used to love a really corny but fun late-1960's children's TV series called "The Banana Splits" when I was very young. It was created in 1968 by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera (a.k.a. Hanna-Barbera), the team most famous for having written and directed the original "Tom and Jerry" cartoons, and for creating the "The Flintstones", "Top Cat", "Wacky Races", "Scooby Doo" and "Hong Kong Phooey" to name just a few.

Click on either of the photos of The Banana Splits below to listen to the really groovy main title song - a.k.a. "The Tra La La Song" - from the series (MP3 format - 660 KB):

Here are the lyrics to "The Tra La La Song":

1. Tra la la, la la la la, tra la la, la la la la.
Tra la la, la la la la, tra la la, la la la la.

One banana, two banana, three banana, four,
Four bananas make a bunch and so do many more.
Over hill and highway the banana buggies go,
Coming on to bring you The Banana Splits show.

Making up a mess of fun, Making up a mess of fun,
Lots of fun for everyone...
2. Tra la la, la la la la, tra la la, la la la la.
Tra la la, la la la la, tra la la, la la la la.

Four banana, three banana, two banana, one,
All bananas playing in the bright warm sun.
Flipping like a pancake, popping like a cork,
Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper and Snork.

Tra la la, la la la la, tra la la, la la la la.
Tra la la, la la la la, tra la la, la la la la.

Written by Ritchie Adams and Mark Barkan.
Performed by Mark Barkan.

One of the key features of The Banana Splits show was the Hanna-Barbera cartoon adventure series "Arabian Knights" (see the image below). It was great fun, and if you're a fan of Disney's "Aladdin" cartoons I recommend you to try and track down episodes of the Arabian Knights to watch, as you're sure to find it just as enjoyable.

In 2008 a brand new version of The Banana Splits show was created, with a very similar appearance and style to the original show from 40 years before. Here are some "New Banana Splits" bonuses for you courtesy of one of this website's "sister" sites:
